Charity Cycle Ride

Press Release

Jones Financial Planning Ltd – Charity Cycle Ride – Lands End to John O’Groats

Two members of the above company are to attempt a charity cycle ride from one end of Great Britain to the other, the distance is around 950 to 1000 miles depending on the route taken, the aim is to complete the ride in 7 days. Steve Jones (top left) & Charles Jones (top right) are a father and son team, who work together in the business, based in Oulton Broad. They will be supported by Barry Rudd (top centre) who has been kind enough to volunteer as driver for the week.

The challenge should not be underestimated, an average of 135 miles per day, and with an estimated calorie burn of 9000 per day the problem may be getting enough food intake! The pair are ideally looking for another two riders, with sufficient fitness to complete long distance rides at an average of 17 to 18 mph, any enquiries are welcome to Steve on 07859023555 or Charles on 07798868701.

There is a just giving website at: www.justgiving.com/jonesfp where donations can be made, including gift aid. Additional sponsorship is also sought such as a sports supplement provider, cycle components, safety clothing and camper van! We would ideally like to have a major sponsor per day / section, this would involve clean riding clothes, food and fuel, an estimate is attached (£174.00), as is a wish list of what’s required for the trip.

All Donations go to East Anglian Childrens Hospice (“EACH”), if you are in any doubt of the need for this charity please click on the links, the bravery of these children is humbling. These kids face a challenge EVERY DAY they wake up, please, please give for this cause!!

Thursday

17th June 2011

After staying in a 4 star B&B we all woke up feeling a lot better after a cooked breakfast and cereal.

As we set off we were 152 miles away from John o Groats, (Charles was told 130 to reduce the moaning).

We followed the Loch's which were in comparison to various days fairly flat, the weather was bright but quite chilly.

We reached Tain in good time and signs were still saying around 85 or so miles to John o Groats, the miles felt like they were increasing.

From Drumnadrochit the hills started to increase, having to climb a 14% incline, Steve's chain once again come off. However it seemed like an excuse to walk.

Hills became frequent with around 50 miles to go with 13% gradients. The day was never ending and we had to climb a final hill before John o Groats.

We finished the day at around 7:45pm after cycling 152 miles and completing the whole challenge in 6 days and 3 hours, A long way ahead of shedule.

Wednesday, Highland Fling!

16th June 2011

"Woke up this morning and won the bet, just as predicted the roads are wet" (we all got the blues, another day of rain!)
Its raining hard, the trip from Glasgow to Glen Coe is wet, cold and windy, this makes it even tougher!
Glen Coe was a tough climb, I must be getting fitter, try as I may I cannot get the heartrate above 163 bmp, same situation at Spean Bridge on the climb up to the Commando Memorial, the wind turned at Fort William and the weather started comming in again, good reason to get a move on, a big black weather band chasing you!
Stats: 126 miles, calories 9300 (must have been the climbs!), overall for the day 17.6 mph average, down on the general average of 18.3, way down on the first day of 20.00 mph, but then we are getting tierd!
Stayed in a B&B in Fort Augustus, great welcome, excellent quality, really accomodating host (Anne) who even washed some clothes for us (thanks very, very much!), would recommend the stay!
